From the moment Zia cuts his wrists and enters a bizarre afterlife reserved for suicides, Wristcutters becomes a strangely uplifting, darkly comic tale about a journey through the hereafter. This is a world where everyone still bears the scars earned from the manner in which they “offed” themselves, while everyday reality is a twisted mirror image of our own mortal world. Zia (Patrick Fugit), along with characters played by Shannyn Sossaman, Shea Whigham, and Tom Waits, tries to uncover what they had missed in their previous lives. Adapted from the novella “Kneller’s Happy Campers” by Etgar Keret, Dukic’s interpretation turns the diverse landscapes and buildings of California into strange and otherworldy locales within a unique parallel world. Wristcutters is “a delightfully mordant, wryly funny look at an alternate reality”. (Todd McCarthy, Variety)
