THIS WEEK:
Sept 2nd - Day Night Day Night by Dir. Julia Loktev / USA/Germany/France, 2006
7:00 & 9:30 pm / 94 minutes
Julia Loktev’s Day Night Day Night takes the idea of terrorism and pulls it out of its typical context, following a young woman, whose nationality and ethnicity are ambiguous, whose name is never spoken, and whose alliances are never disclosed. Every mundane act is taken into account, as the spectator slowly realizes that she is being prepped to ignite a bomb in Times Square. Loktev attempts to subvert viewer preconceptions and even illicit a sense of sympathy for this young woman, who is just beginning to realize the power and gravity of her task. At the core of the film, Loktev’s “subject, ultimately, is religion – how it can inspire devout action, but in certain crucial moments can’t be explained at all. She captures the absolute power in that awe.” (Wesley Morris, the Boston Globe)
